Abstract : An experimental study was made of the flow structure in a three-dimensional separation region and of the effect of the free-stream Mach number on the flow pattern near a cylindrical obstacle. The model consisted of a flat plate with an infinitely high circular cylinder attached to it at 140 mm from the leading edge. The diameters of the test cylinders ranged from 3 to 30 mm; the Mach numbers varied from 1.75 to 3.85. The boundary layer before the separation line of the plate was turbulent. Results are given for interaction between the shock wave and the turbulent boundary layer and for the separated flow ahead of and behind the cylinder. Generalized relationships between the characteristic dimensions of the separation region, the external flow parameters, and the cylinder diameter are obtained. (Author)
