Abstract : The purpose of the study was to demonstrate the feasibility of a high-power, high-efficiency transverse-wave amplifier. The interaction between the negative synchronous wave and the transverse circuit wave on a twisted structure was investigated in an earlier program. The theory of twisted slow-wave structures is reviewed and experimental results obtained are re-examined. The circuit study shows that there are several unwanted modes of propagation in the circuit previously used. The theory of the twisted circuit shows that each mode is made of many space harmonics traveling with different phase velocities. Spurious oscillations due to both the longitudinal and transverse-wave interactions may be explained considering interactions between various circuit modes (and space harmonics thereof), and beam waves.
