Abstract : The calculation of the trajectories of charged particles in an electrostatic field may be performed by the combination of two fairly common digital computing techniques. Firstly, thru application of relaxation techniques, the boundary value problem for solution of the Laplace equation is solved. Secondly, knowing the field and hence the force vector acting on the particle at each point within the field, the fundamental equation of Newtonian physics may be integrated by ordinary numerical process. In the application involved here, particle velocities are small as compared with the speed of light and Newtonian mechanics is sufficient. This report records the mathematical manipulations necessary to putting the problem into form for solution, the dimensions of the physical units involved, the computing block diagrams which lead to the computer program and specific sample runs the results of which were used in experimentation on the sputtering of gold.
