Abstract : Various features of a computing system planned for the Moscow Railways are discussed in general terms. The system will automatically keep records and provide control of traffic; it requires transmission of information on trains, cargoes, etc., from way stations and terminals to a computing center; about 8.5 million decimal digits per day are expected. At the computing center, each incoming channel feeds information into a card puncher; later, 80-column cards are introduced into a digital computer. Punching patterns are explained, and types of errors and malfunction are discussed. The summation-check and the parity-check methods are explained. Potentialities and requirements of the readout-function check (Ural-4 computer) and the program check are compared. (Author)
