Abstract : Polynomial model functions relating the paper properties to the pulp composition, the clay content and the degree of treatment are suggested. The functions have been tested on hand sheets of known composition and degree of mechanical treatment. Spruce sulphite and pine and birch sulphate pulps were used. The breaking length, the tear factor and the specific scattering coefficient were measured. The evaluation of the coefficients was made by computer with regression analysis. A special program was developed to graphically represent contour curves in ternary diagrams. It was found that the variation of the paper properties could be satisfactorily expressed as a quadratic function of the composition and the degree of treatment. In all cases a coefficient of variation less than 10% was obtained for the studied properties. (Author)
