Abstract : The research project has been concerned with the discovery of politically significant mediating elites in several countries of the Middle East and North Africa, and with devising empirical methods for assessing the probable political effectiveness of those elites in integrating their countries ideologically and in performing the political roles accruing to them as a consequence of the political context in which they have emerged and as a consequence of their own ideological definition of their political responsibilities. The results of this project tell us a good deal about future political trends in these countries, about the constraints on their foreign policies and about their potential for achieving political stability. More specifically, this research has been directed at the question of whether the countries of the Near East and North Africa can achieve political stability without becoming aligned with either of the great powers and without becoming dependent upon the direct military support of one of the great powers.
