Abstract : Interest in the thermal stability of secondary explosives has increased recently both in connection with self-heating and ignition behaviour and because Service use often demands adequate stability in severe environmental conditions. A description is given of the results of an investigation in which it was demonstrated that the early stages in the thermal decomposition of RDX at temperatures below its melting point occur in the gas phase rather than the solid phase as hitherto supposed.
