Abstract : Disproportionation between alkoxyl radicals and nitric oxide is an important step in the low-temperature reduction of nitric oxide, which is a factor controlling energy release in the combustion and degradation of propellants and explosives. The paper shows that for the s-butoxyl radical the activation energy of this reaction, which occurs after every 10,000 collisions, is indistinguishable from zero; these results are similar to those previously reported for other alkoxyl radicals. The kinetics of the pyrolysis of di-s-butyl peroxide, and the heat of formation of the s-butoxyl radical, which are of relevance to the oxidation of hydrocarbons, are also established. (Author)
