Abstract : A simple method for calculating heat transfer and friction on a flat plate in a turbulent boundary layer at variable and in particular, stepwise discontinuous surface conditions is outlined. It is based, like the others, on a physical premise of the existence of an inner layer in which the effects produced by arbitrary variation of boundary conditions are accumulated. Expressions are derived for heat transfer and friction stress for the case of stepwise variation of conditions on a wall by substituting the characteristic values of V sub zero and T sub zero on the edge of a boundary layer with corresponding values of V sub S and T sub S on the boundary of the inner boundary layer developing from the origin of discontinuity conditions. These expressions are generalized for the case of continuous variation of conditions on the wall. (Author)
