Abstract : Poynting effects are investigated experimentally for cylindrical spedimens subjected to torsion. To determine the curvature of the end-surface, steel cylinders of 25 mm diameter and 500 mm length were subjected to pure torsion. Each specimen was cemented to a glass disc through which the torsion was effected. Curvature changes of the interface between glass and steel could be observed by optical interference. It was found that within the experimental error second order changes in length of a steel cylinder subjected to torsion are independent of the radius. For the determination of changes in diameter, steel wires of 0.8 to 1.3 mm diameter and 1600 mm length were subjected to torsion. The changes in diameter were determined with the use of special strain gages wound on the specimen. It was found that the relative change in diameter was positive and proportional to the square of the shear strain. (Author)
