Abstract : A variety of improved, electroluminescent (EL) phosphor thin films was prepared on glass substrates by vacuum deposition of ZnS:Mn with high activator concentration. Magnesium fluoride was found to be usable as a nucleating film and tellurium dioxide was investigated as an insulating dielectric. The effect of heat treatment on the performance of the phosphor film was studied. High-brightness films were made using MgF2 as nucleating film, GeO2 as insulating dielectric and a 570C heat treatment. Aging data for thin film EL panels was analyzed and shown to be kinetically of the second order. Solid-state switching and scanning circuits were developed for presenting an image on a translatable five-by-seven element matrix of an EL panel with 784 elements. Circuitry was designed for use with a seven-bar EL numeric readout with 1.5 volt decimal inputs. (Author)
