Abstract : The results of tests of upsetting under pulsed loading are in agreement with theoretical calculations which make the latter suitable for application to practical computations. Pulsed-loading, unlike static loading, does not affect the curve shape of the true stresses at low rates of deformation. In calculating cold upsetting under pulsed loading of materials being hardened, stress relaxation during unloading and repeated loading can be disregarded. Pulsed loading in upsetting light-gauge parts considerably reduces the specific deformation stresses and makes possible plastic deformation prior to obtaining billets of minimum thickness. Aluminum AD-1 cylindrical specimens with a different ratio of depth and diameter were used for experimental verification of the theoretical data. (Author)
