Abstract : Optimal encoding of fully known continuous signals, considered as determined functions of time, is discussed mathematically. The problem reduces itself to the minimization of some error functional, or to determining the minimal value of epsilon-entropy by successive approximation. Dynamic programming is deemed preferable to standard methods of classic analysis, even though it requires the employment of a universal digital computer. (Author)
