Abstract : The US residential construction industry is alleged to be impeded by several constraints such as: union restrictions; restrictions on competition in building material supply; the small size of the average home building firm; and limitations imposed by building codes. To determine the probable impact of such constraints on construction costs, the price of new, single-family houses was related to the characteristics of these houses and measures of the constraints through multiple regression analysis.
