Abstract : Formulas giving statistics of arrival time of propagated sound pulses in a random medium are presented. The medium is assumed to have a Gaussian spatial covariance function and a mean refraction index depending only on depth. The results are approximately valid for source-receiver distances up to about 100 miles. Expected beam patterns of a three-dimensional array suspended in a sound channel are computed. The computations are based on the assumption that array gain is solely dependent on phase fluctuations, which are given by the phase function of geometrical optics. (Author)
