Abstract : A statistical analysis was made of the jet-stream complexes (two or more jet streams existing simultaneously at different altitudes) observed at 35 aerological stations in Southern USSR in the 1961-1963 period. Only those jet streams whose speed equalled or exceeded 60 m/sec (216 km/hr), and periods when two wind peaks existed simultaneously at different levels, were taken into consideration. Instances of three or more simultaneously-existing peaks were handled separately. The Dzhordzhio jet-stream classification was adopted for the analysis, but with the exception of lower stratospheric streams, higher-level streams were omitted. In 1959 there were only 42 occurrences of jet-streams complexes and in 1960, only 34. However, the number jumped to 235 in 1961; this increase was attributed to improvements in the radar observation techniques used by 1961, and to the fact that high-speed jet-stream complexes actually were more frequent to that year. Monthly statistics are given for the three years. Number of periods in which dual jet streams were observed. It is concluded that jet-stream complexes occur frequently enough to be considered normal aeroclimatic phenomena. (Author)
