Abstract : Optical frequency doubling by means of an RDP crystal was investigated. The Q-switched neodymium glass laser used in the investigation emitted 45-Mw pulses and had a beam divergence of 5 sec of arc. Fully polarized emission was obtained by using a stack of Brewster-angle plates inside the cavity. The angular dependence of the second harmonic power and the dependence of the transformation coefficient on power density were investigated for 1--2-cm RDP crystals. The power density was varied by means of an f = 19 cm cylindrical lens. Transformation of the laser output into the second harmonic occurred through the k10 + kle yields k2e interaction (where k10 and kle are the wave vectors of the primary ordinary and extraordinary beams and k2e is the wave vector of the secondary extraordinary beam). Disagreement between the experimental and theoretical results is attributed to crystal imperfection, inaccurate calculation of refractive indices, and improper crystal orientation. (Author)
