Abstract : A brief description of the apparatus and data gathering and reduction techniques used in a falling-sphere experiment performed at the White Sands Missile Range on March 6, 1965 is given. The effect of including acceleration terms in the calculated wind velocities is examined. The spectra of the soundings are obtained and the effects of radar operating characteristics and data smoothing procedures are discussed. Shears are calculated and normalized histograms are obtained for 5 km regions throughout the soundings. The decay of correlation measure between soundings is used to obtain estimates of the horizontal and time scales of the motions. The deduced scales of motion are compared, for consistency, with simple gravity wave theory and the results are discussed in terms of gravity wave and tidal motions. (Author)
