Abstract : By reinterpreting expectation value as effective value, a wave mechanics is obtained which contains spontaneous emission explicitly. This implies a nonquantized electromagnetic field, and allows the bound electron to take on a continuous range of energy values. Radiation reaction force then occurs on absorbtion, but not on emission. It is argued that present experimental evidence does not exclude this possibility. An experiment is given for making a positive test of the predicted phenomenon. This involves a beam of sodium atoms, deflected by means of illumination from the side by a sodium lamp. The beam of atoms is collected on a flat surface for analysis of the distribution pattern. Nominal deflection angle is 3 x 10 to the minus 5th power radians. (Author)
