Abstract : Polyethylene 100 microns thick was irradiated using a 60Co source to a dose of 10 to the 5th power to 4 x 10 to the 8th power rads. The sample was kept under vacuum for 20 days and exposed to the air for 5 days. The ir spectrum was detd. and analyzed, and graphical representations illustrating the dependence of the optical density of the bands at 1720, 1465, 1375, and 965/cm on the dose are shown. A mechanism to account for the processes of degradation and loss of crystallinity is suggested. (Author)
