Abstract : A review is presented of the results of studies made by Hess (1961), Vul'fson (1961), and Parchevskiy (1958) on the structure of thermals. Results are given for similar experiments carried out by Soviet glider pilots during the 1964 All-Union Glider Contest at Orel. A short series of 15 barograms recorded by a glider at that time is analyzed to illustrate the methods used in a study of the structure of thermals. Characteristics analyzed included: air speed of the glider in and out of the thermals, glider rate of climb, number of thermals encountered per unit of flight distance (spirals) and flight time, speeds of the thermals, levels at which the thermals began and ended, their diameters, the frequencies of rising and descending currents, and the general type of thermal, i.e., streamlike or cellular. A discussion on the apparatus used to process the data includes an analysis of non-Soviet equipment and a brief description of two models of an apparatus proposed by the Main Geophysical Observatory.
