Abstract : The system of equations for solving supersonic viscous (boundary layer) interacting flows is examined for the case of 'weak interaction.' Present methods employ 'Blasius' flat plate flow as initial conditions and permit the flow to evolve from that point. The work shows that this case exhibits a saddle point singularity in that either highly retarded or highly accelerated flows evolve. These findings then cast doubt on the present day formulation of such problems and suggest that more complete terms from the Navier-Stokes equations be employed rather than the simplified boundary-layer equations.
