Abstract : Absolute cross sections for excitation of the N2(+) first negative bands in collisions of 20- to 100-keV prontons with N2 have been measured under single conditions. On the basis of a charge-exchange model which predicted the observed variation of intensity with pressure, emission cross sections for the (0,0) 3914 A N2(+) first negative band and the (0,2) 3805 A N2 second positive band were obtained for hydrogen atom impact and the sum of the cross sections for electron capture and loss were found for hydrogenic particles traversing N2. An upper limit of 4 x 10 to the -20th power sq cm has been established for the cross section for 100 keV proton impact excitation of the second positive band. A critical analysis shows that the intensity-versus-pressure curve for this band provides a sensitive means of detecting secondary processes in this beam experiment. Cross sections for production of H sub beta radiation, determined from observations made at a point 30.5 cm from the collision chamber entrance, were found to be more than a factor of three larger than those reported by previous investigators. The cross section for collisional quenching of a 100-keV hydrogen atom from the n=4 level was estimated at 3 x 10 to the -16th power sq cm. (Author)
