Abstract : An extremum automatic control system was developed for maintaining the ion current in mass spectrometers at its peak value. The value of the ion current is related to the trajectory of the ion motion. The peak value occurs when the ion beam is centered on the entrance slit of the ion collector; any drift away from this position decreases the current. The ion current is a function of the accelerating potential, I = f(U). In this system, the current is regulated by an incremental servosystem operating in accordance with extremum control characteristics. The control characteristics of the system are analyzed, a block diagram and a schematic diagram are included. The function of the system is explained. Other systems are mentioned briefly. The control system was successfully operated in laboratory and industrial condition.
