Abstract : The effect of axial loading on the vibration of a radial ball bearing was investigated. The radial gap and the waviness of the path of the free play of the rings are considered to be the main sources of vibration. The radial clearance produces vibrations of the inner ring of ball bearings in the direction of the y-axis which decrease with increasing axial loads; the path vibration of the ball moving along the x-axis on a wavy surface increases with increasing axial loads. The resulting vibration of the ball bearing first decreases to a minimum, then increases to a maximum and remains constant. The character of these vibrations was proven on six types of ball bearings at 12,000 rpm. The vibration spectrum of one of these bearings at axial loads of 0.2 and 2.5 kg shows a prevalence of low frequency vibrations at small loads and high frequency vibrations at high loads. (Author)
