Abstract : Although the rivers emptying into the northern and western Gulf of Mexico influence the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations, it was found they apparently have no influence on the organic carbon of the surface and deep waters off the continental shelf, since the DOC and POC concentrations of the waters off the shelf are comparable to values reported in the Atlantic and elsewhere. The DOC and POC concentrations of the surface and deep oceanic waters vary very little with time in contrast to the near-shore Gulf water. (Author)
