Abstract : A newly invented laser cavity, made by two roof-top prisms with roof angle smaller than 90 deg., was experimentally investigated. It is shown that this cavity is much less sensitive to crystalline imperfections of the active material than cavities made by plane or spherical mirrors. With such roof-cavity the following results were obtained, for both ruby and Nd(3+) glass pulsed lasers: (1) Single transverse mode oscillation in normal (i.e. not Q-switched) operation, (2) Single longitudinal and transverse mode oscillation in Q-switched operation. A single transverse mode, mode locked ruby laser with pulses half-width of approx. 5 psec has also been obtained. Two appendices are also included. The first one reports on an experimental study of the dynamic behavior of a single mode Q-switched ruby laser and compares the experimental results with theory. The second one reports on a theoretical study of the effect of host dispersion on a self-locked laser. (Author)
