Abstract : The report presents the design of an optical system for measuring turbulent diffusion parameters in the boundary layer. Consecutive, vertical cross-sections of a tracer cloud are illuminated by a pulse laser and individually photographed by a synchronized camera. Analyses of the photographs by a microdensitometer yield basic data on distribution of particle concentration over each cross section. From these data and the recorded geometry, data reduction procedures then enable a determination of the center of mass, concentration distribution relative to the center, and the trajectory of the cloud. The theoretical and experimental work upon which the design is based is described in detail. (Author)
