Abstract : A systematic basis of positronium chemistry was developed to understand the reactions between positronium (Ps) and ionic or neutral species in liquids. The Ore gap concept was shown to be inapplicable to liquids and the energy regions where Ps can form and react were defined in terms of ionization protentials and bond strengths of the constitutents of the liquid and of Ps. Experimental data on positron lifetimes in many aqueous systems were interpreted in terms of oxidation of Ps by H(+) and Ps compound formation. Positron lifetimes in silver halide crystals, photographic sensitizers and desensitizers were measured to estimate defect concentrations and electron and positive hole trapping effects. (Author)
