Abstract : This report presents the results of a study of the charge rearrangement reactions of Na with O2(+), NO(+), N2(+) and CO(+) by a merging beams technique. The basis principles of the merging beams technique are discussed. A general description of the apparatus built for this study is given. The cross section for the production of NaO(+) from Na and O2(+) has been determined in the energy range from 0.05 eV to 10 eV. The rate constant between 0.05 and 1.0 eV is about 1.2 x 10 to the -10th power cc/sec. Both a stripping and a rebound process for the reaction were observed. Some details of the angular and energy distribution of the products are discussed. The rebound process was studied in more detail for the reaction Na + NO(+) yields NaO(+) + N. The results are compared with a few existing reaction models. (Author)
