Abstract : It has been suggested through our previous work that during ad libitum feeding of rats, onset of meal and meal size are controlled and regulated through distinctly different mechanisms. The available evidence indicates that the amount of food eaten in each meal and the frequency of the meals contribute separately to the long term regulation of intake. The present investigation aims at the elucidation of the metabolic correlates of these two parameters of free food intake. Apparatus has been developed allowing the continuous automatic recording of: (a) the respiratory exchanges (R.Q. and oxygen consumption), and (b) the ad libitum feeding pattern of the animal. Using this technique, 12 twenty four hour records have been obtained from 5 normal rats. (Author)
