Abstract : The stress and displacement fields of short thick-walled cylinders subjected to axially symmetric loadings are solved by the analog of beams on elastic foundation. The basic moment-curvature equation of beams is modified to include the effects of shear deformation. Solutions for beams of infinite length are first obtained for various loading conditions in terms of seven developed functions. By applying end-conditioning forces and moments to a beam of infinite length, in order to satisfy the required boundary conditions for the beam of finite length, the solutions are developed using the method of superposition. The stresses for step-changed pressure produced by the sectorial threads are calculated for seven terms of the Fourier series. A general computer program, called 'STAGUN,' using an IBM 360 computer, is written for the application to the design of large caliber cannons. The computer solutions are compared to the available experimental data obtained from strain gage readings on a full scale model and the three-dimensional photo-elastic analysis on a small scale plastic model. The comparison of analytical and experimental results shows a fair agreement. (Author)
