Abstract : Stability experiments were conducted with a gyroscope containing liquid in a circular cylindrical cavity having a rigid rod along its axis. The experiments were designed for comparison with the predictions of a previously developed theoretical analysis that assumed the liquid to be inviscid. Owing to the presence of viscous effects, discrepancies between theory and experiment were anticipated and found. The discrepancies are resolvable, however, by means of a boundary layer correction to the inviscid theory. (Author)
