Abstract : Mention is given to the research carried out by the authors. This research includes a heterodyne spectrometer, developed and modified to enable studies of optical scattering in order to investigate the time dependence of critical opalescence in a binary mixture (aniline-cyclohexane). The critical opalescence of pure carbon dioxide was studied next. The main result of that study showed that the thermal conductivity of a pure fluid diverges at its critical point as a power of the temperature interval from the critical temperature. Xenon appeared to be a good candidate for the prototypical critical phase transition, and optical measurements which determine the equation of state in xenon were performed.
