Abstract : The report describes several empirical methods for estimating flash-gap dimensions in closed-die forging. Most of the methods suggested are based on statistical analysis of existing data on weight, size, and complexity of over 3000 forgings. A method for deriving a mathematical expression of shape difficulty in forging has been suggested by some Soviet workers. This shape-difficulty factor is shown to be extremely useful in predicting flash-gap dimensions and flash weight. With some refinement, the shape factor may also prove useful in process design, cost estimating, and assisting engineers to make decisions about feasibility of manufacturing. (Author)
