Abstract : Because algae can be used as a source of food and as a raw material for drug production, the knowledge of their composition, quantity, and distribution in littoral belts of seas is gaining significance. The significance and achievements of divers, notably biologists and botanists equipped with aqualungs, is briefly discussed. In addition, the contributions of still and motion picture photographs, including aerial reconnaissance, are pointed out. The study is based on research work conducted in Kandalakshskiy zaliv of the White Sea, in the coastal belt of Sakhalin of the Sea of Japan, and in Gdynia-Orlowo of the Baltic Sea. (Author)
