Abstract : The significance of phytoplankton and the factors affecting its development in water basins is analyzed and compared with photosynthesis. In connection with the theme, the factors of the surrounding medium are classified by the effect exercised by them on the development of plant cells, pointing out their limiting, dominating, lethal and neutral aspects. Also the chemical and physical nature of the factors is outlined, naming the chemical elements that participate in the formation of cells, their plasma, nucleus and the elements that control these processes such as phosphorus, silicon, potassium, calcium etc. In conclusion, the effect of physical factors, notably the light, temperature, optical properties of water (turbidity and color), current, etc., on the development of phytoplankton is analyzed.
