Abstract : A solid-state laser configuration in which the active medium (a ruby crystal), rather than mirrors, is utilized as a resonator to produce multiple internal reflections is described. The electromagnetic field in such a resonator is dependent on two coordinates. The beam path within the resonator forms a one-way closed loop. The main characteristics of the resonator are: (1) The effective optic path length of the active medium is about n times greater than in the case of unidimensional resonators of the same size; (2) A laser device incorporating such a resonator requires no special reflectors even for a small-sized active medium; as a result, the number of optical parts is substantially reduced and alignment of the laser systems can be dispensed with; (3) Divergence of the output beam is decreased in one plane; (4) Face pumping is easy and effective; (5) The resonator is less sensitive to temperature variations of the active medium. Tests have shown that, for a pumping energy of 800 j, the generation pulse has an energy of 0.8 J. (Author)
