Abstract : The property of controllable anisotropy is taken as the fundamental variable in analyzing the possibilities for calculating the optimum structure for fiberglass-reinforced plastic in nonuniform shells of revolution operating under zero-moment stressed-state conditions with regard to the effect of the binder. The problem is solved from the condition of least pliability of the shell with respect to a specific type of deformation under the effect of the applied form of loading. The most effective reinforcing structure is defined as that in which the anisotropy provides maximum rigidity with respect to a given load. The solution is given in terms of the winding angle corresponding to minimum deformation. Formulas are derived for determining the optimum winding angle for cylindrical, barrel-shaped and tapered shells under various types of loads with various boundary conditions. (Author)
