Abstract : A detailed discussion is presented on the duration and frequency of seasonal wind directions, average wind speeds, local winds, and storm winds in the vicinity of the Rybinsk Reservoir. Equations and conversion factors were given to reduce mean monthly wind speeds measured at seven shore weather stations to those at one open-water (POM) station in the reservoir. Analysis are made of observation conducted in 1959--1962 at the shore stations, and hydrological profiles are constructed. The POM was located on the top deck of a steel barge moved near the center of the reservoir throughout the navigation season. Wind speeds measured at the weather stations depended considerably on local surface relief, station shelter, and the elevation of the station site. Wind speeds averaged 20-33% higher above the open parts of the reservoir than on its shores. Diurnal variations in wind speeds were most marked near the shore and were very small above the open water. (Author)
