Abstract : When planning digital automatic machines designed to recognize a large number of patterns in space, the time required to make the decision is of considerable length. A reduction of this time can be achieved by the proposed combined method which consists of two parts: 'deletion' and 'comparison'. The essence of the method is investigated, and a formula for the relative saving in time is derived. It is shown that the saving depends on the dimension of the sampling space, the number of deletion steps and the transmission coefficient, and does not depend on the number of recognized patterns.
