Abstract : The problem of determining the angular elements for the external orientation of meteorological satellite TV pictures by the recognition of geographic references is considered. Equations are derived for obtaining solutions when there are errors in the initial data making it impossible to use direct transformation methods. The proposed method requires that at least two geographic reference points be recognized from the picture. In the problem under consideration the known parameters are the coordinates of the satellite at the time when the photographs are made and the coordinates of the geographic reference points at the location and on the photograph. The elements of angular orientation are known with a certain error. The refinement of the angular elements for external orientation is carried out using transformation equations with expansions in trigonometric functions of small angles. The problem is solved by several approximations and the final accuracy is determined only by the accuracy of the initial data. When the initial data are correct the error of the method does not exceed plus or minus 4 min. The basic equations of the iteration method are derived. It is proposed that a digital computer be used to carry out the successive approximations. (Author)
