Abstract : Tracer particles are frequently used to study fluid flows. This report describes experiments with an electronic detection system for tracer particles, which it was thought would provide a rapid readout of velocity. The light scattered from the moving particles was passed through a grid, in such a way that the frequency of modulation by the grid was found to vary with the latex particle size, from 1 for 1 particles, to 10 for 10 particles. Bandwidths were wider than expected, suggesting that out of focus particles were being detected, which would prevent the use of this method for studying turbulent flows. (Author)
