Abstract : A contactless determination was made of the velocity field in a gas by suspending minute particles in the gas flow and measuring the particle velocities optically. The procedure is used in the present investigation to measure the distribution of the velocities in a high temperature gas emerging from a cylindrical tube. The gas was hot air from plasmatrons and the tube was water cooled. In the cold air the particles were illuminated with a 500-watt lamp; in the hot air, the particles (aluminum) burned and produced clearly visible tracks. The light from the particles was measured with a photomultiplier and recorded with an oscilloscope. The various errors involved in the apparatus and their sources are discussed briefly. The points obtained in the high temperature current in the turbulent core of the boundary layer practically agree with the isothermal values. The results become difficult to interpret in the immediate vicinity of the wall and further improvement in the procedure (decrease in the size of the particles, increase in the sensitivity) will be needed to improve the method.
