Abstract : Rigorous solution to the wave equation for the penetrated and scattered fields of an underwater, elliptical cylindrical liquid lens that is illuminated by a line pressure source or by a plane pressure wave is obtained. Results are given in terms of Mathieu and modified Mathieu functions. It is found that each expansion coefficient for the scattered or penetrated pressure field is coupled with all expansion coefficients for the incident pressure field. Decoupling of these coefficients occurs when the elliptical cylinder lens degenerates to a circular cylinder lens. Also noted is the fact that the focal point for the intensity field does not always coincide with that for the pressure field. (Author)
