Abstract : The structure of a shock wave in a monatomic gas has been the subject of investigation by many authors. In this problem there are two relevant mean free paths, viz., the length over which upstream distribution is altered by collisions and another length over which downstream particle distribution is changed through collisions. Appropriate distribution functions over these length scales are postulated and a moment method to solve the Boltzmann equation is described to solve the shock wave structure problem. For strong shocks the results agree with those of Mott-Smith's theory while for weak shocks, the results are in agreement with Navier-Stokes and other approximate solutions. (Author)
