Abstract : The E region of the ionosphere (roughly 90 to 140 km above the earth's surface) is normally well-behaved and predictable. At times, narrow layers of ionization known as sporadic E or Es form in this region. These layers, which take different forms in the equatorial, temperate and auroral zones, are interesting both from the scientific and radio propagation standpoints. (Author)
