Abstract : Assuming metals to be isotropic, infinitely large, homogeneous, and continuous elastic media, the tetrahedral and octahedral position energies of such interstitial impurity atoms as C, N, O, and H in body-centered cubic metals Fe, W, Mo, Ta, and Nb are calculated by using the concept of the elastic dipole. Calculation results show that the remaining atoms are all located at octahedral positions, except that H occupies the tetrahedral position in W, Mo, Ta, and Nb. Also, a critical radius has been found to determine whether interstitial atoms are in the tetrahedral or the octahedral position. In the last part, activation energy for diffusion of interstitial atoms among octahedral sites is calculated, and results obtained all rather closely agree with previous workers' experimental data.
