Abstract : The mutual diffusion between niobium and metals of groups IVa, Va, and VIa was investigated. Specimens of vacuum-melted 99.9% pure titanium, zirconium, vanadium, tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten were ground, polished, clamped with similarly treated niobium specimens, and annealed in a vacuum at 1300C for 100 hr. Metals having a lower melting temperature than niobium exhibited a higher diffusion mobility than the latter and a more intensive penetration into Nb while Nb diffused in these metals only slightly.
