Abstract : The problem of interaction between a jet and an opposite homogeneous supersonic flow is investigated. The approach used for determining the contact surface of two streams consists of assuming the shape of the interface to be in the form of a one-parameter surface and determining the dependence of the interface parameter on the initial parameters of the flow and jet with the aid of integral laws of mechanics. The approximate solution obtained at the stagnation point can be extended downstream by known methods. In the case of supersonic flow, for example, the solution is obtained by the method of characteristics. The method is substantiated by several examples related to the interaction of incompressible flows. Expressions are derived for forces exerted on the interface by jet and flow, from which the parameter of the contact surface is determined. The results show that the diameter of the contact surface is proportional to the diameter of the jet and that the proportionality coefficient depends on the initial nondimensional flow parameters. A scheme for solving the problem of jet-flow interaction at arbitrary supersonic velocities by means of a computer is described. (Author)
